Though I’ve been living in Sweden for nearly three years now, it’s only been in the last six months or so that my understanding of the language has been good enough to listen to Swedish radio without wanting to pull my hair out. It’s not the music that was a problem (though commerical music programming here does actually leave a lot to be desired) but the ads and announcers themselves…it drove me crazy that I couldn’t understand what they were talking about.
But now I listen to the radio every day on my way to and from work and I follow both the commercials and conversations pretty well. I even get the jokes! Today was especially easy, because the two disc jockeys were interviewing an American artist, Gavin DeGraw, in English, of course. Evidently the female sidekick has a bit of a thing for Mr. DeGraw, which her male counterpart was very happy to point out during the the course of the conversation.
Now I’m pretty sure Gavin is used to gushing female fans…but he clearly was not prepared for this woman to confirm her admiration for him by saying very loudly and emphatically, "I want to jump your bones!" on national radio. You could practically hear his jaw hit the floor of the studio. For as cool and reserved as Swedes may appear to be in their dealings with folks they don’t know very well, talking frankly about sex is rarely a problem…even in the most public of forums.
Welcome to Sweden, Gavin.
