The joy of in-laws…

We survived “Midsommar” in fine fashion, especially when you consider that the party we went to started at 2 p.m. (which is when the alcohol consumption started as well). It was hosted by another mixed-nationality couple, he Swedish, she British, so there were a few other items on the menu besides herring and prinskorv (thankfully). The weather could not have been better. In fact, the fantastic forecast that had been trumpeted throughout the regional all week held up beautifully until this morning when we were awakened by thunder. It’s been raining ever since.

Now as a rule, I really enjoy a good thunderstorm … and after the beautiful day we had yesterday, I would normally be able to forgive a rainy day. But Dr. Darling‘s brother’s family is coming down from Halmstad for dinner tonight and we were counting on barbecuing. Not just because of the menu, but because of the space. Our kitchen just isn’t large enough to seat everyone comfortably … so being able to use the common picnic tables in the back garden was kind of key to the plan.

I’m personally inclined to cancel the whole thing … except it’s hard to rescind an invitation that was never issued in the first place. They are picking some friends up at the airport around 10 p.m. and figured that as they were going to be in the city anyway, they’d invite themselves to dinner. Kind of nervey considering it’s a holiday weekend, but since we don’t entertain them all that often (mostly because of our lack of space) and we didn’t have any other plans besides recovering from Midsommar, Dr. Darling didn’t think she could say no. (I, on the other hand, would have had no problem telling a white lie about being busy doing so.)

In the meantime, their 16-month-old son (whom I would never haul to an airport that was nearly two hours from home at 10 o’clock at night, but hey, that’s just me and I’m not a parent) has come down with some kind of mysterious rash that they initially thought might be Chicken Pox, but since he doesn’t seem to be feeling too bad they’re bringing him anyway. I just hope it isn’t something that we can catch.

Should be an interesting evening.
