Super-jocks R Us!

I guess it’s a good sign when I’m so busy that I don’t even have time to blog about my activities!

Such was the case this weekend, when the sun shone from about 4:30 in the morning until almost 10 p.m. and we were out in it for most of that time.  There are three main reasons for this:

1. Sweden‘s summers are notoriously short to the point where you feel you have to optimize every moment of every day of the season.

2. Dr. Darling had been home alone all week and wants to play, Play, PLAY on Saturdays and Sundays.

3. It was too bloody HOT to spend much time in the apartment.

Yes, I said it.  HOT. Which is, of course, completely relative. When I lived in the midwestern U.S. anything approaching 90 degrees fahrenheit qualified…especially with the always present humidity. But here in the land of “Who needs air-conditioning?”, 78 degrees qualifies…especially when you live on a 2nd-floor apartment with poor air-circulation that has been baking in the sun since the aforementioned 4:30 a.m.!

Now the air-circulation problem can be solved by propping open our apartment door as well as the door to the outdoor walkway leading to the other 2nd-floor units. This and the right combination of open windows creates a nice breeze and keeps two of our three rooms pretty comfortable. But the Swede is completely weird about the neighbors and other strangers being able to see into our hallway/kitchen and/or hear what we’re talking about or watching on TV (or, heaven forbid, the toilet flush), so it’s a constant battle between us.

So it’s just easier and more comfortable to be outside where there is a breeze, and so that’s where we spent most of the weekend…doing outdoor things. We kayaked on the Öresund and cycled into the city to meet some friends for fika on Saturday, and then we cycled a lot more on Sunday. (Out to a shopping center about 8 kilometers away to pick up a set of dumb-bells, which we put to use later in the day.)

And tonight, we’re going to the movies just so we can sit in an air-conditioned theatre for a couple of hours while the apartment cools down!
