So I finally manage to get Dr. Darling down to the beach for a swim on the very day there is an unprecedented invasion of lady bugs along the coast. It was like a scene out of a Hitchcock film.
They weren’t a problem while we were actually in the water (which was fantastic, BTW), but they were all over us when we got out. Crawling, flying…sometimes even biting…which entomologists have since explained in the media was because they ‘re thirsty.
The Lady Bug population explosion has something to do with the heat and the lack of rain. I’ve never seen anything like it. They were EVERYWHERE. Fortunately I am not squeamish about insects…especially about insects as cute and harmless as Lady Bugs.
But even Lady Bugs can be a little unsettling when there are hundreds of thousands of them.
And I promise you I’m not exaggerating.
