This may be the most brilliant move I’ve seen so far in the campaign for marriage equality in the U.S. An organization called the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance has filed formal paperwork to put a measure on the state ballot that would make having children compulsory for heterosexual couples who want to be married. Does the group really think it has a snowball’s chance in hell of passing? Of course not.
But if it makes the ballot, it will force a public conversation about one of the underlying assumptions of the Washington Supreme Court’s decision to uphold that state’s ban on same-sex marriage last summer. Procreation is specifically mentioned numerous times in that ruling, and these folks decided to run with it.
The full story can be read here. I especially liked the part where the organizers say they thought about drafting a proposal that would require procreation BEFORE marriage, but they "didn’t want to piss off the fundamentalists too much." LOVE IT!
