My office has been so awash in Easter candy this week that I swear there are calories in the air.
Huge multi-coloured cardboard Easter eggs have been arriving from vendors all week, each one filled with sweets that I’ve mostly managed to resist because Swedes have yet to discover the sublime experience that is the Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg.
Maybe all the sugar in the atmosphere was the reason why everybody bolted so early this afternoon? I initially thought the only motivation for the mass exodus by 3 p.m. was to get a running start on the four-day holiday weekend … but now I’m re-thinking that
Yes, you read that right. Sweden, one of the most secular countríes on the planet, designates Good Friday and Easter Monday as national holidays. This is my fifth Spring in Vikingland and I’m STILL baffled by it.
But just because I don’t understand it doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate it!
