I spent a lot of time watching World Cup soccer the past couple of weeks … in most cases rooting against Germany. It’s a reflex action, really. I don’t know why … something left over from years of watching former East German athletes dominate the Olympics (often with the assistance of East German judges) maybe.
But regardless of my historic and nonsensical biases (two of my oldest and dearest friends are Germans for heaven’s sake … we spent Easter with them this year!), they deserved the win on Sunday. And the games’s only goal by reserve midfielder Mario Gotze was one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen on a soccer field.
